Pediatric Dentistry works to prevent disease, decay, and pain. In order to do this, we at Aesthetic Dentistry work to help your children develop proper dental habits while performing thorough exams twice per year.
Aesthetic Dentistry has a special spot in our reception area just for the little ones! To make going to the dentist easier for younger ones, we also have TV’s where kids can watch their favorite cartoons.
Your child’s teeth begin to form six months before birth and erupt through the gums as early as four months. Typically all twenty primary teeth will appear by age three, though the pace and order of eruption varies.
Around age six, the initial phase of permanent tooth eruption begins and can last until about age 9. Children have twenty baby teeth and adults have 28 permanent teeth, not including wisdom teeth.
Tooth decay, also known as caries, is completely preventable when treated correctly by a qualified dentist or dental professional. Caries can have a negative impact on your child’s quality of life.
Consistent exposure to starches and sugars such as candy, cookies, soft drinks, and fruit juices can cause acids to form which eat away at your tooth enamel. This damages the mineral structure of teeth resulting in decay.
Parents should watch for signs of early on-set gum disease and immediately let our office know should you see them.
Early signs and symptoms of development of periodontal disease (gum disease) include:
- Bleeding gums
- Loose teeth
- Increased Spaces between teeth
- Persistent bad breath
- Pus around gums and teeth
- Receding gums around teeth
- Red and inflamed gums
- Tenderness and discomfort
Practice Makes Perfect
Help your children maintain good oral hygiene at home with these simple practices:
Brush at least twice a day! It helps to remove plaque formed from meals eaten throughout the day. Be sure to brush the outer and inner surfaces of EACH tooth and don’t forget your tongue. *Parents, do NOT use toothpaste with fluoride until your child is 3 years old, unless otherwise advised.
Floss at least once a day to help clean the space between your teeth. Flossing helps to prevent damage to your teeth, gums, and bone.
Rinse with water after meals. It loosens food particles that may otherwise get stuck after a meal.
Implementing these practices and attending regular dental appointments creates the foundational habits your children need to help prevent disease, decay, and unnecessary pain.
